“Food tastes better when you eat it with your family”
We were recently invited to go to Turnpike Tavern, which is part of the Sizzling Pub chain, after its refurbishment to sample its new menu and surrondings. I often go anyway as I woke local and its a place we go for lazy lunches or catch ups after work.
I have to admit, it was in need of a refurbishment because for the last 10 years I have been going there it doesnt really seem to have changed much – decor wise, the menu does change quite often.
The decor was so different and looked really modern from the carpets to the walls and even the new furniture it really does look alot better and not so much of a “pub”. It looks more of a family restaurant.
This was the first time we have been for food as a family of 4, a toodler and a baby doesnt sound the best to have a relaxing meal but both kids were really good apart from the odd “who can scream louder”. There were a few familys there so the whole atmosphere was nice and relaxed. It was busy for a Wednesday night so I would advise to book in advance just incase there’s no tables.
On to the food
There is a lot to choose from off the menu and has all the things you would expect from pub food. For starters me and Keith both had the Southern Fried Chicken Pieces – With peri-peri sauce and sour cream, and was really cheap at £3.79.
For mains I had Crispy Sweet Chilli Beef – Crispy strips of beef smothered in sweet chilli sauce served with peppers, plain rice and a giant prawn cracker, £9.49. I was really surprised this was on the menu as its something I normally always order from the chinese so I was intregued to see what it tasted like. It didnt dissapoint, it was just like the chinese.
Keith had the The Triple House – Stacked high with a beef burger, chicken fillet, a southern fried chicken fillet and American cheese sauce, £9.59. Keith said it was lovely and probably the best burger he has had and the american cheese was amazing. It did look lovely, who doesnt like a massive burger.
Heidi ordered from the kids menu and had Chicken Nuggets – 3 chicken breast pieces & BBQ sauce to dip, which came with mash and beans, just look how it came out – so cute! Her meal came part of a deal with a drink and desert and she chose the Vanilla Ice Cream, which she enjoyed.
Staff couldn’t do enough
The staff were really helpful and couldnt do enough for us, they were really good with Heidi too. Making her feel grown up by asking her what type of ice cream she wanted etc. The food was really quick to come out also and especially with children and short attention spans it was perfect. As soon as a table became free they were there to clear up which I like beacuse theres nothing worse than sitting next to a table filled with empty plates and bits of food.
We will defintly be back again as a family as its so family friendly plus once I go back to work after maternity leave im sure there will be many more trips for lunches and after work drinks.
